Kyiv/Washington, August 25, 2025:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday publicly expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump for extending heartfelt wishes on Ukraine’s Independence Day. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskyy lauded the United States for standing firmly with Kyiv in its fight to protect sovereignty, freedom, and peace.
“Dear US President Donald Trump, thank you for your heartfelt congratulations on Ukraine’s Independence Day. We appreciate your kind words for the Ukrainian people, and we thank the United States for standing shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine in defending what is most valuable: independence, freedom, and guaranteed peace,” Zelenskyy wrote.
Trump’s Letter of Support
President Trump, in his official message, congratulated Ukraine on 34 years of independence and praised the resilience of its people.
“On behalf of the American people, I extend my congratulations and warmest wishes to you and the courageous people of Ukraine as you celebrate 34 years of independence,” Trump wrote. He also highlighted Ukraine’s “unbreakable spirit” and reaffirmed America’s respect for its sovereignty.
Trump further underlined his commitment to diplomacy:
“Now is the moment to bring an end to the senseless killing. The United States supports a negotiated settlement that leads to a durable, lasting peace that ends the bloodshed and safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty and dignity. God bless Ukraine.”
Context of Diplomatic Engagements
The exchange comes amid a series of high-level diplomatic meetings. Earlier this month, Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and also met with Zelenskyy and European leaders to push for talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. While these moves sparked hope, Russian officials have signaled that negotiations remain slow, and no direct meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin has yet been scheduled.
International Support for Ukraine
Ukraine’s Independence Day also drew messages of support from several global leaders, further underlining Kyiv’s international alliances. Zelenskyy specifically thanked Switzerland for backing Ukraine’s political and economic stability. Congratulations also poured in from Armenia, Montenegro, Poland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, China, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Austria, among others.
