The new legislation replaces the 20-year-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. It aims to strengthen rural livelihoods by providing a statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household. The benefit applies to households whose adult members are willing to undertake unskilled manual work, with the objective of enhancing income security and employment opportunities in rural areas.
