The Raja Saab movie review: Prabhas shines, but the story gets lost in a messy whirlwind

About two-thirds into The Raja Saab, director Maruthi appears to strike gold with a clever narrative twist. The story builds toward an intriguing face-off between protagonist Raju (played by Prabhas) and antagonist Kanakaraju (Sanjay Dutt). What makes the clash unusual is that the two characters rarely share the same physical space. Instead, they engage in a psychological duel — exchanging challenges, surviving dangerous stunts, battling crocodiles, and escaping explosive traps without direct confrontation. The conflict unfolds like a strategic chess match between a grandfather and his grandson, offering genuine promise.

At first glance, The Raja Saab feels like an exciting cinematic cocktail. It blends a coming-of-age story about a young man trying to restore his grandmother’s lost honour with elements of haunted palace comedy, romance, fantasy adventure, and mystical sci-fi. The film shifts between playful humour, magical escapades reminiscent of Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia, and bold high-concept thrills. Prabhas remains charming throughout, guiding viewers through the sprawling three-hour-plus runtime with his easy screen presence.

However, the film’s biggest strength — its abundance of ideas — also becomes its downfall. The narrative buckles under the weight of too many concepts packed into one storyline. Instead of weaving these themes into a cohesive experience, the film becomes cluttered and confusing, leaving viewers unsure of its emotional direction or narrative destination.

While The Raja Saab holds flashes of originality and visual spectacle, its potential remains largely untapped due to uneven execution and outdated storytelling choices. The film promises innovation but delivers inconsistency, ultimately preventing Prabhas’ affable performance from fully rescuing the ambitious project.
